There’s a wide variety available, and I’m still finding ones I haven’t encountered before. Considering the vast majority of the game focuses on scavenging and crafting, it’s great to see that there’s so much on offer, and it’s not all lost if you kick the bucket.Ĭlients act as more than just extra lives, however, as each one has a key trait that makes them quite different from the last. All the items are useful, ranging from guns and body armour, to gizmos that allow you to hack turrets or make your shoes slip-proof. If you have a part you don’t need, you can always recycle it into materials that you can use for something else instead. You can use raw materials to make parts, and you can use those parts to make items. Items are crafted via salvage, and there’s a pretty deep crafting system going on. ![]() You can keep the items and gizmos acquired from before, so your journey will continue up until you run out of either food or fuel. Following the initial criminal (or ‘client’)’s demise, the AI grabs another poor soul out of confinement pile to take over the duties of their predecessor. This death introduces you to the main mechanic of the game: it’s a roguelike! Don’t let that put you off though, as its influence is relatively minimal. That safety doesn’t last for long though, as you’ll soon be met with death – something the game advises you was unavoidable. The game shows off a few of the early-game enemies in this tutorial, albeit safely behind locked doors. It’s stylish, but also functional too: every enemy has its own unique sounds, making it easier to figure out what’s lurking around each corner. Everything retains that same comic-book look, right down to the sounds which are punctuated by bold zany text. The game has a strong opening tutorial section which shows that the beautiful visuals aren’t just restricted to the cutscenes in fact, I’d argue that the visuals are far more impressive in-game. ![]() Thus follows a string of hilariously bureaucratic red tape as you try to perform what should be a straightforward task. That means that you’ll need to scavenge the pieces needed to make a new one. Unfortunately your citizen card gets shredded by mistake, meaning you’re not allowed to operate it. Set aboard a prison ship, ‘The Void Ark’, the ship’s AI has selected you – one of the prisoners – to restart the ship’s FTL drive, which is currently non-functional. Until then a lot can happen aswell.Void Bastards presents its rather simple story via cel shaded comic strips (a style that has become quite popular as of late). Well, that will take me at least another 10 hours or so easily. Thats good, but after i have finished it once i probably wont return for Ironman Mode. But i need a tad bit more depth.Īs of now its like playing a mix of Faster than Light (oving your ship from left to right with no way back) and Mothergunship (with more tactics and sneaking). Its a really good game and does a lot right. I wont lie, i hope they add a few more things to the game, especially modes and a few new mechanics. ![]() Technically it is a different playthrough each time. When you die you start from the beginning of the galaxy, but keep equipment upgrades. It reminds me a lot of Mothergunship and Cryptark. To adress your last question(s), you can easily play it again. This game feels like a solid mix between random/varied and handcrafted parts. Yet, totally random would also mean no details and heart in the levels. ![]() The cover up works like 80% of the time and you dont notice repeated layouts too much. So while it mostly accomplishes to make you believe that everything is randomly generated and varied, it sometimes hits you right in the face showing you that its really not. Yet i had 3 occasions where i finished one mission on a ship and my next mission had the exact same layout. Especially since ships can have effects that varry from time to time(for example a ship starts with deactivated systems, closed doors, darkness or hazards). Thats ok, they still are mixed up enough to not leave a lot to be desired. You encounter the same ship layouts relatively fast. ![]()
